At the Opening Ceremony, finalists from 80 or more countries, regions, and territories — from Argentina to Zimbabwe, Israel to Saudi Arabia, and Ghana to Ukraine — are congratulated by the Society for this major achievement. As country names are called out at the Opening Ceremony, the finalist representatives from each country are celebrated. This is a signature event of ISEF, presented by the Fair’s producer, Society for Science. THE OPENING CEREMONY

It is rare that Nobel Prize winners, MacArthur Fellows, and National Medal recipients are all sitting on the same panel. At ISEF, finalists are treated to a session that includes panelists holding these very accolades, and, as a result of the virtual platform, the 2021 Panel event will be open to all event registrants. Panelists from 2020 included Elizabeth Blackburn, Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, 2009; Martin Chalfie, Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2008; Elissa Hallem, MacArthur Fellow, 2012; Cato Laurencin, University Professor, National Medal of Technology and Innovation in Medicine, 2014; and W.E. Moerner, Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2014. The discussion was moderated by Joe Palca, NPR Science Correspondent. SPONSOR THE EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PANEL
