This event takes place on Tuesday night of Fair week and typically showcases a venue or activity that gives attendees a look into the world outside of the convention center and is representative of the city or state where ISEF is being hosted. For 2020 in Anaheim, of course, it will be a trip to Disneyland! All of the badged attendees are invited to attend the Welcome Event, and about 3,400 take advantage of the opportunity. Past events have included a night out at Universal Studios with exclusive access to the park and the chance to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter ™ , buyouts of the Carnegie Science Center and Heinz Field (the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers), and a chance to attend a professional Major League Baseball game with lots of bonus features and with recognition and experiences exclusively for ISEF attendees. Dinner is served, and this event often lasts later into the evening.

More than 200 students attend ISEF as student observers. This group of students includes those who may have been first runners-up at their fairs, younger students who are being mentored to perhaps one day be ISEF finalists, and other young members of the affiliated fairs’ official party. While the student finalists are busy with judging on Wednesday, the Society’s staff partners with scientists, universities, and other scientific organizations to put together an awesome and inspiring day of programming tailored for student observers. The activities take place at an outside venue. Lunch and snacks are provided in between hands-on activities and the chance to hear from working scientists who are fluent in a wide variety of interests. In 2019, the observers learned how to design a better baseball bat from a scientist employed by a Major League Baseball team, how to build a robot with scientists from the local science center, and how to conduct a geophysical survey with the guidance of university professors.
